“Where Athletes Bring Their Families”

Babies & Children

Parents realize that Chiropractic Care can help them be healthier, but they hesitate to get the children’s spines checked for misalignment and vertebral subluxation. Vertebral Subluxation is when the bones of the spine misalign and put tension on the nerves. This causes a decrease in communication between the brain and body and lowers how your body functions. The nervous system controls and coordinates all of their body functions, just like adults. The child’s nerves are not as pain sensitive or developed as adults and may not feel when the bones are causing a decrease in nerve flow. I check and adjust my son’s spine regularly to see if there are any subluxations, so he can grow up healthy and strong.

Why do Babies & Children need adjustments?
To align bones that are out of place.

So how do they get misaligned bones or subluxations?
The very first subluxation can occur if they are constrained in-utero causing the delivery to be more difficult. Then some deliveries are difficult and strong forces must be used to get the baby out, such as the Dr. pulling hard on the baby’s head if the mom is not progressing. Another example is when they have to use tools, like vacuum and forceps, to get the baby out because it is under distress. Even C-section is not always an easy delivery.

Then as a baby develops and hits certain milestones, such as holding their head up, lifting their torso, rolling over, and sitting up can cause stresses on the developing spines and nervous systems.

Once a baby tries to start walking they can fall down many times in the course of one day causing bones to misalign. Then when they are toddlers and able to play with friends or siblings. They become very creative in their games that are very physical.

Is It Safe?
Chiropractors have been adjusting children for over 100 years. Adjustments for babies and children are modified and sometimes the pressure is a light force with the tip of a finger.

How early can they start with adjustments?
As soon as the first day! Dr. Weitzman would be honored to arrange to adjust your baby as soon as you would like. He loves to see babies get a great start in life.

Will the adjustment hurt my child?
Dr. Stuart Weitzman holds a Post-Graduate Certification from the Academy Council on Chiropractic Pediatrics through the ICPA (www.ICPA4kids.org). Chiropractors specializing in children use very specific, gentle techniques to care for children. In the very young, the adjustment is as light as a finger touch. Infants often sleep through their adjustment and older children willingly relax and enjoy the care.

Women During Pregnancy

Dr. Stuart C. Weitzman has done extensive post-graduate work in the field of Chiropractic during pregnancy and pediatric adjusting. He has worked with many moms to help them have a more comfortable time. Dr. Weitzman is certified through the ICPA in the Webster In-utero-constraint technique. This technique checks the balance of your pelvis and corrects it as it has a close relationship with the uterus that holds the developing fetus. Our office is equipped with special tables and pillows to accommodate for a pregnant patient for treatment. Dr. Weitzman works with OB/Gyns to co-treat pregnant patients. Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can relieve and even prevent the common discomforts experienced in pregnancy.

Why do pregnant women become uncomfortable?
Many women have preexisting unnoticed or painless imbalances in their spine. Then add on some of the following EXTRA stresses from pregnancy:

  • Rapid increase/decrease in weight can pull and tug on the bones of your lower back.
  • Postural changes can increase and decrease the normal curves in your spine.
  • Difficulty sleeping or changes in patterns.
  • Altered appetite and eating habits.
  • Loosening of ligaments to allow for growth of the baby and prepare for birth.
  • Flat or pronated feet, which can alter mechanics of the lower extremities and make your pelvis become imbalanced.
  • Emotional changes (hormonal shifts / new responsibilities).

Now try to maintain your normal routine. This is why a large percent of pregnant women experience discomfort or pain during their pregnancy!

Doctors of Chiropractic work specifically with your pelvis throughout pregnancy restoring a state of balance and creating an environment for an easier, quicker, safer delivery. Chiropractic adjustments reduce interference to the nerve system allowing your uterus to function as its maximum.

As your baby develops, your uterus enlarges to accommodate the rapid growth. So long as the pelvis is in a balanced state, the ligaments connected to the uterus maintain an equalized, supportive suspension for the uterus. If your pelvis is out of balance in any way, these ligaments become torqued and twisted, causing a constraint to your uterus. This constraint limits the space of the developing baby. Any compromised position for the baby throughout pregnancy will affect his or her optimal development. Conditions such as torticollis (a condition when the baby’s neck is stuck to one side) may occur because a baby was cramped in-utero. If the women’s uterus is constrained as birth approaches, the baby may be prevented from getting into the best possible position for birth. When the pelvic bones are misaligned, it can lead to tension on nerves and cause a decrease in nerve flow to the muscles of your pelvis. These muscles may not perform at their best.

Maximizing your balance and alignment and minimizing the tension on the nerves before, during and after your pregnancy can give you the greatest possible advantage for you, your husband, and your new baby!

For Athletes

Want to Play Better and Stay in the Game?
I (Dr. Stu) played organized sports from age 5 up until now. I started with soccer and played many sports and gravitated to lacrosse. I had an injury playing soccer and I sat out one game and it seemed the problem went away. Then the lacrosse season started up and the constant pounding of a lot of running on hard surfaces made me suffer. As I played more and more, it seemed to get worse and worse. My orthopedic doctor told me it was a sprain/strain and to stay off of it and use NSAIDS. I was already taking 3 advil to play each day and sitting out was not an option for a young athlete. The season came and went and I barely made it through. Next season it started up again with the cold and pounding from a lot of running. A coach of mine made a suggestion to try a chiropractor. It was the best decision I ever made. I wish I would have gone sooner. I was back to playing GREAT again in a short time and was feeling healthier than ever. I stayed with regular adjustments during the season so my problem would not return, but also to keep my spine performing at its best. My mother had also noticed that my allergies and asthma were all but gone! The decision to see a chiropractor changed my life and allowed me to play the sports I loved pain free and at a high level. This is why I became a chiropractor to help others do the things they love and do them as best as they can….

Yes, we can help your body heal and recover from injuries, but chiropractic is being utilized more and more for elite and professional athletes. Sports involve coordination, timing, and strength. In any sport, a great play or winning the game can be decided by seconds or determined by centimeters. Chiropractic focuses on balancing your body and restoring normal function to your nerves. Getting Chiropractic care can make the difference! This is why every professional team utilizes Chiropractors to get that extra edge.

Some examples of great professional athletes that use Chiropractic: Joe Montana & Tom Brady (2 of the best quarterbacks ever!!!), Emmitt Smith (all-time leading rusher. He brought his chiropractor on the field for the celebration when he broke the record.), Wade Boggs (Hall of Fame Baseball player who has 3000 hits), Evander Holyfield (Former heavyweight Champion of the world), David Cone (a great NY Yankee pitcher and owner of a perfect game), Tyger Woods (One the greatest golfers), Bo Jackson (Star in 2 professional sports – baseball and football), John Stockton, Robert Parrish, John McEnroe, Eric Lindros, AND maybe you the weekend warrior, the casual athlete, the competitive athlete, or someone that is just physically active!
